TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said world countries properly took stances against the US president’s move to declare Quds (Jerusalem) the Zionist regime’s capital.

“Fortunately, all of the world’s countries, except for one or two, stood up against this wrong move and leaders of Muslims countries, save for one or two, adopted good stances in this regard,” Rouhani said at a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

“They (US and Israel) seek to use this (as a means) against the Palestinian nation, holy Quds, al-Aqsa Mosque and regional countries, including Iran,” he added.

Rouhani called for vigilance and regional unity in the face of such moves.

US President Donald Trump officially declared the disputed city Israel’s capital, despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.

In a speech at the White House on December 6, Trump said his administration would also begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city.

The announcement drew widespread condemnation and opposition from around the world.

On December 21, more than 100 countries defied Trump and voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to withdraw its decision to recognize Quds as Israel’s capital.

Israel has occupied East Quds since the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed the area in 1980 and sees it as its exclusive domain. Under international law, the area is considered to be occupied territory.

Elsewhere in his comments at Tuesday’s press conference, Iran’s president called on the rulers of Saudi Arabia to reconsider their behavior in the region.

Referring to Riyadh’s regional failures, including in Yemen, Syria and Iraq, Rouhani said Saudi Arabia is also making a mistake by considering the Zionist regime as a friend.

The Zionist regime is undoubtedly the main enemy of the countries of the region, he said, urging Muslim countries to abandon their differences and disputes and unite against the common enemy.
