1300 Kashmir Activists, Politicians Still in Custody

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Ever since the Kashmir clampdown started, over 5,000 youths, politicians and individuals have been arrested since August 5.

 

They were finally released as the Kashmir Valley marked three months of spontaneous shutdown on Monday.

However, fresh police reports reveal about 1300 people remain in detention while other have been released.

Around 3,500 individuals who included prominent politicians, “known mobilisers” including three former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, were all detained in the unprecedented crackdown in August as soon as New Delhi revoked the semi-autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir.

September and October too witnessed arrests as many as 2000 in areas where clashes were reported between security forces and locals.  

According to reports, initially over 279 political leaders and party activists were detained.

“Around 34 senior political leaders remain detained at the Centaur hotel in Srinagar,” the police said.
