TEHRAN (IQNA) – The representative of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani in Karbala hailed the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) for ensuring security in the city and elsewhere during mourning rituals marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalai in a message thanked the “heroic fighters” of the PMU, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, for their contribution to the Muharram mourning ceremonies by safeguarding the security, Al Sumaria TV reported.

He also lauded the PMU for making sacrifices to defend the Iraqi nation and its sanctities.

Earlier, Ali Al-Hashemi, a top security official in Karbala Governorate, said the security measures for ensuring security in the governorate were carried out successfully.

Shia Muslims around the world mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the Sayyid-ul-Shuhada (master of martyrs), in Muharram, the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.

This year, the day of Ashura fell on Sunday, August 30.
