Promoting Quran among Youths Necessary for Fighting Extremism

TEHRAN (IQNA) - An Iraqi Quran activist underlined that deepening the youths’ connection with the Quran is necessary to combat extremism and Takfir.

Speaking to IQNA, Mahmoud bin Shakir bin Muhammad al-Karkhi said the younger generation is exposed to Takfiri and radical ideologies and that in order to prevent the spread of extremism it is necessary to strengthen the connection of the youth with the Holy Book.
The Iraqi Quran researcher added that Muslims, especially the youth, should be acquainted with the Quran and its sublime teachings.
Al-Karkhi, who is a member of the jury panel of the 5th International Holy Quran Competition for Muslim Students, further said that the contest is a step toward enhancing the youths’ connection with the Quran.
Head of the Quran Reciters Association in Iraq’s Diyala province suggested that conferences and seminars be held on the sidelines of the competition in which to discuss issues like Islamic unity, tackling extremism and avoiding sectarian differences.
He also suggested that a women’s section be added to the competition as Muslim women have great Quranic talents.
The 5th International Holy Quran Competition for Muslim Students will be held at Tehran’s Milad Tower on January 1-5.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Al-Karkhi called for establishment of a union of Muslim world’s Quran activists to provide a venue for memorizers and reciters and other Quran activists to be linked and exchange views and experiences.
Mahmoud al-Karkhi was born on May 29, 1965, in the city of Baqubah, Diyala province. He is a prominent Qari and has permissions from 50 great Quran reciters in Iraq and Egypt.
Al-Karkhi has headed the Quran Reciters Association of Diyala province since 1997.
