The federal Islamic authority of Malaysia warned Muslims to be wary of reading the digital versions of the Quran, saying there might be a tendency to misinterpret its verses, which would undermine the faith.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, or Jakim, said Muslims should only read copies of the Quran which had been approved by the Home Ministry's Quran Printing Licensing Board.

“The Quran now is available in software, Android applications, digital pen and easily downloadable computer formats.

"But we must be wary of this development which could subject the Quran to misinterpretation by those who oppose and are prejudicial towards the Quran," read the sermon’s text.

Home minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last April said his ministry would propose an amendment to the Printing of Quranic Text Act 1986 to curb what was believed to be the wrongful use of the Quran’s verses.
