Al-Refaei informed his family of his release during a phone conversation on Tuesday, Al-Hurra news website reported.

He said he is now in Kuwait’s embassy in Tunisia.

The embassy is taking the required measures for the return of the qari to his home country, the report said.

Some Kuwaiti lawmakers as well as social media activists have appreciated the embassy and the foreign ministry for their efforts to secure the release of al-Refaei.

Security forces in Tunisia’s Gafsa Governorate had detained the qari on Thursday.

According to a Tunisian security source, he, along with a number of other people, has been arrested at the order of the country’s prosecutor general.

Hannan al-Khamiri, the arrestees’ lawyer, said a total of six individuals, including the Kuwaiti qari, had been detained in the case.

According to Khamiri, they had organized a Quran memorization competition for children on Thursday when the venue of the contest was raided by the security forces.
