Malaysia PM to Be First Foreign Leader to Deliver Friday Prayer Sermon at New York Mosque

NEW YORK (IQNA) – The Friday prayer sermon at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York (ICCNY) mosque will be delivered by a foreign leader for the first time this week.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to deliver this Friday’s sermon at the mosque, which is the first mosque opened in New York City.

The invitation to deliver the sermon was announced by Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir during a press conference with Malaysian journalists at the Office of the Permanent Representative of Malaysia Monday afternoon.

ICCNY is an Islamic religious and cultural organization established in the early 1960s. The center was planned as a Muslim institution consisting of a mosque, school, library, lecture hall, museum, and house for the Imam.

Its objectives include serving the Muslim community in Manhattan in particular and the entire American Muslim community in general.

This includes their religious needs and as a place of worship, classes to help them and the children learn detailed knowledge about their religion, Islam and enlighten the public with real knowledge about Islam.

Zambry said Ibrahim will be in New York from Sept 20 to 23 to attend the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
