Traditionally, law enforcement in Norway, as in other Nordic nations, do not carry firearms. However, the Police Director General has mandated a nationwide arming of police officers effective immediately.
The decision comes in light of specific threats directed at the Muslim population and the upcoming celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
Roar Hansen, a police spokesperson, confirmed to AFP that several mosques have reported receiving threats.
This temporary measure follows a similar authorization that allowed Norwegian police to carry weapons during the Easter holiday, from March 27 to April 2.
The move reflects a broader concern over the rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes, which have escalated globally since the onset of the Israeli onslaught in Gaza.
