TEHRAN (IQNA) – A new Muslim civil rights group have been established in India to defend the rights of the country’s Muslims.

A group of Muslim activists, political leaders, lawyers and others have formed a civil rights group, Indian Muslims for Civil Rights (IMCR), to fight for the cause of the oppressed and the persecuted sections of the society in the degrading political situation in India.

The Indian Muslims for Civil Rights (IMCR) was result of a meeting held at Ghalib Institute in New Delhi which was attended by 450 Muslim intellectuals, activists, former bureaucrats and technocrats, lawyers, journalists, civil society members, religious scholars and politicians, according to Pakistan Observer.

This comes as Muslims have been under pressure by the ruling BJP party during recent years.

Critics say PM Modi has failed to intervene and stop rising incidents of attacks on minorities, misuse of religion by Hindu hardliners, and intolerance against dissent in the country.

Since coming to power nationally in 2014, the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been accused of pursuing discriminatory policies against Muslims, who form nearly 14 percent of India’s 1.35 billion population.
