TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraqi qari Osama al-Karbalaei who came second in the sixth edition of Qatar’s Katara Prize for Quran Recitation was honored during a Quranic circle this week.

The Quranic circle, titled Arsh Tilawa (heaven of recitation) was held at the holy shrine of Hazrat Abbas (AS) in Karbala on Friday evening by the Quranic Sciences Assembly, which is affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine.

It included Quran recitations by Karbalaei as well as other senior qaris of the Astans of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrines.

The program was aired live on Al-Kafeel satellite TV network.

Iranian qari Mohammad Hassan Hassanzadeh won the Katara Prize for Quran Recitation.

The preliminary round of the competition was held virtually, with the contenders from 67 countries sending their recorded recitations to the organizing committee via the cyber space.

One hundred qaris from 13 Arab and 18 non-Arab countries qualified for the next stage, which included three in-person rounds held in the Qatari capital of Doha.

The contenders were first divided into twenty 5-strong groups and the top contender in each group made it to the second round, which was held in the same way.

At last five top participants, including himself, qualified for the finals.

The Iranian qari bagged the top prize in the international Quranic event. The runner-up was Osama al-Karbalaei and Egyptian Sheikh Abdul Razaq Shahawi came third.
